Headache Q&A

What is a headache?

A headache refers to any type of pain you feel in your head or face. The pain may be dull, sharp, throbbing, constant, or come and go.

Your headaches may occur every once in a while or all the time.

Though you don’t always need medical help for a headache, if your headaches cause severe pain or are a recurring problem that affects your life, the team at Southern Tennessee Spine and Pain Center may have a solution for you.

What are the headache types?

There are many types of headaches. Some of the headaches that cause recurring pain include:

Migraines

Migraines are a neurological disorder that causes throbbing pain on one side of the head that can last hours or days. People with migraines may have other symptoms, such as sensitivity to light or nausea.

Migraines are a recurring pain condition. People with 15 or more migraines a month have chronic migraines.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Though these types of headaches generally cause mild to moderate pain, they can be a recurring problem.

Cluster headaches

Cluster headaches cause a severe piercing sensation behind your eye. The pain may occur several times a day for weeks or months and then go away.

New daily persistent headaches (NDPH)

NDPH is a type of headache that develops suddenly and persists for three or more months. The pain is constant and may not improve with medication.

What can I expect during a headache evaluation?

You can expect a patient-centered examination when you visit Southern Tennessee Spine and Pain Center for a headache evaluation.
